¡á Lectures are organized by blocks of topics covering Korean Folk Culture and its tradition, Performing Art, Traditional Music, and Korean Economy and Politics. All lectures are taught by English-speaking professors. Three (3) hours of classroom lectures in the morning hours, Monday through Friday each week.
¡á Course Description
ISS01 Understanding Korean Folklore
Introduction of various aspects concerning Korean traditional culture. Focus is on the basic elements in Korean folk culture such as village communities, rituals, burial customs, folk religion, folk play, annual customs and festivals.
ISS02 Introduction to Korean Culture, Language, People and Their Customs
Understanding Korean culture and customs, language, people, religion, education, values and the korean society in general. Students will have opportunity to share their own experiences and discuss similarities and difference among different countries.
ISS03 Korean Culinary Experience
Prof. Moon invites students to a Korean culinary experience. Professor Moon demonstrates her culinary skill and encourages students to participate in making such traditional dishes as KimChee.
ISS04 Traditional Korean Musical Instruments
This lecture introduces traditional Korean musical instruments and its ensemble.
Students will have an opportunity to hear traditional music performed by nationally acclaimed CAU students. They will also have a chance to try out different instruments.
ISS05 Hallyu (The Korean Wave) and the Korean Culture
The newly emerging Hallyu finds its source of spreading strength in the cultural veins, which seem to have disappeared but still breathe in our society. Memory and consciousness of society about its tradition should be found and newly connecting strength should be cultivated. Hallyu should start with the spirit of popular culture, and every field in our society should render the base where its flowers will blossom.
ISS06 Korean Language
The goal of this course is to enable the international students, who do not know the basic characteristics of Korean language, to understand the spelling and phonological systems and grammatical characteristics of Korean language. In addition, this course introduces various aspects of Korean culture in a natural way, through the learning of Korean language.

ISS07 International Relations
Introducing important issues in international relations. Students have an opportunity to learn about dynamic changes in world economics, politics, and social agenda via global media, such as CNN and BBC. The course helps students to enhance their ability to comprehend the world around them and expand their limit of knowledge about current affairs, in order to become a global leader.
ISS08 Korean Government and Policy Making
This course covers various issues in Korean government and policymaking. Specifically included are the evolution of Korean government, government structure and changes, the administrative reform movement, including anti-corruption efforts, and restructuring to meet the challenges of globalization.
ISS09 Korean Economy: Its past and future Challenge
The course introduces the emergence of the Korean economy during 1970 up to 1997 and discusses various issues surrounding economic restructuring and adjustments needed to meet future challenges it faces in an increasingly competitive global environment.
ISS10 Democracy and Foreign Policy of Korea
From a comparative perspective, South Korea can be characterized as a country that is highly exposed to the outside world and whose domestic politics, particularly after democratization, is highly dynamic and volatile. This lecture is intended to help students understand dynamic interrelationship between democratic politics and foreign policy.
